PRP Injections Therapy for Arthritis

Arthritis pain can affect quality of life. It can even become debilitating to some sufferers. There’s a treatment that can help relieve pain and restore enjoyment of life. It’s called PRP injections therapy.

What Is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Our blood is made up of plasma, which is the liquid portion, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. When a patient is looking for PRP injections for joint pain or PRP injections for injuries, their doctor can take a sample of their blood to produce them.
As of now, there is no medically accepted threshold of when a PRP preparation can be considered “platelet-rich”. This is due to the fact that each treatment varies because of things like:

  • Patient’s initial platelet count
  • How the blood samples are processed
  • Any additives doctors add to augment the PRP’s healing results

How Are PRP Injections Made?
PRP injections begin by the doctor collecting a sample of the patient’s blood. Once the sample is obtained, it’s put in a centrifuge. This device spins the sample at a high rate of speed. The forces exerted cause the blood to separate by density and form different layers.

The heavier red blood cells will not be used in the preparation.. White blood cells and platelet-poor plasma are collected. This is then spun again in the centrifuge and the next spin leaves the doctor with a much more concentrated solution of platelet-rich plasma for injection directly into the affected joints or injured areas.

Benefits Of PRP Injections
Platelets help to heal tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and muscles with their high levels of growth factors. They also produce other proteins which can stimulate the body’s regeneration of damaged tissue and initiate cell division. They also are integral in blood clotting in injuries.

Some ways the injections may produce healing and relief include:

  • Catalyzing the formation of new cartilage
  • Inhibiting pain
  • Raising the levels of lubrication in joints
  • Decreasing the levels of inflammation in joints
  • Slowing down progression of osteoarthritis

While there are still studies to be done of the full effects of PRP injections therapy and its uses, numerous patients have experienced relief.
