Physical Therapy For Shoulders

getting help from a specialist in physical therapy Westchester as soon as possible. At Advanced Spine and Sports, we specialize in several different treatments for patients who are experiencing shoulder pain. Often times, we create unique treatment plans for individuals who are experiencing such pain. One of the most common types of exercises that a physical therapist will assign for you to do is stretching. Stretching improves flexibility and helps with relieving tension in your shoulders. As a result, it can reduce pain and inflammation.

Here are five common and effective stretches that you can practice to relieve your shoulder pain.

  1. Shoulder Rolls

Shoulder rolls relieve shoulder tension. This exercise is performed by standing straight up with your feet shoulder-width apart, and your arms must handle loosely on your sides. You will then roll your shoulders forward, upward, and backward in a flowing motion. You can repeat this around ten times, and then reverse the motion from back to front.

  1. Arm Circles

Arm circles improve your flexibility in your shoulders and also relieve shoulder tension. This exercise is performed by standing up straight, and stretching your right arm in front of you (make sure that you have enough space around you to adequately perform this exercise). You will then life your arm straight, without bending it, and move it in a circular motion so it is back to its initial position. You can repeat this around ten times per side.

  1. Forward Bends

Forward bends relax the back of your shoulders. This exercise is performed by standing with your feet wide apart, stretching your arms backward, and locking your hands behind your back. Then you will open your chest and bend your hips forward, while your hands are still locked over your head. Try holding this pose for a few seconds before you get back up. This exercise will help exponentially for shoulder pain relief.

  1. Shoulder and Neck Stretches

Shoulder and neck stretches are the most basic stretches of the bunch and it is also a very common exercise for people to relieve shoulder pain. This exercise is performed by bending your head to your right and trying to touch your right shoulder with your ear. You will then do the same on the left side. You can hold this position until you feel your muscles stretching.

  • Cross-Arm Stretches

Cross-arm stretches are performed by standing up straight and stretching your right arm over your chest without bending your elbow. You will then gently pull your right arm with your left arm. You can do this for a few seconds and then do the same thing to the other side.

Keep in mind that although most of these stretches can be done in the comfort of your own home, it is best that you consult with a physical therapist or chiropractor who thoroughly understands these types of injuries. If your injuries are more serious, then you should definitely get a professional’s advice before it gets any worse.
